Storm Fionn lashes Ireland, UK as 2nd storm looms for Wednesday night

Storm Fionn, the sixth named windstorm of the season, is already lashing parts of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and impacts are expected to continue into Wednesday.

Damaging winds, accumulating snow and coastal flooding are all expected across the British Isles as Fionn unleashes its fury on the region.

Coastal regions of southern and western Ireland will endure the st rongest winds with frequent gusts of 100 km/h (62 mph) and occasional gusts as high as 120 km/h (75 mph).

Occasional gusts of 80-100 km/h (50-62 mph) are forecast for the rest of Ireland.

Gusts up to 100 km/h (62 mph) are also expected in western Northern Ireland, southwestern Wales and Southwest England.

This magnitude of wind can result in downed trees, power cuts and travel disruption.

The rest of the United Kingdom will be spared any damaging winds; however, gusty winds will accompany rain and snow across these areas.

Snow and ice will be another concern across the UK and Ireland into Wed nesday.

Snow can accumulate up to 3 cm (1 inch) throughout the northern half of Ireland with up to 5 cm (2 inches) in the higher terrain.

The heaviest snow in the UK will be focused across eastern Northern Ireland, northwestern England and southwestern Scotland.

Low levels can expect 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) with amounts reaching 25 cm (10 inches) in the highest terrain above 300 meters (984 feet).

This snow combined with the strong winds can create blizzard conditions at times and result in dangerous travel.

Conditions will improve slightly across the United Kingdom by Wednesday afternoon; however, another storm will arrive Wednesday evening and last into early Thursday morning bringing further powerful winds and the threat of rain and snow.

Milder air arriving with this storm will cause precipitation to fall mainly as rain with any snowfall limited to the highest terrain of Scotland.

This rainfall on top of recent rain and snow across the British Isles could produce some localized flooding.

Complicating matters, powerful winds will again bring the risk for downed trees, power cuts and travel disruption across much of the British Isles.

Widespread wind gusts of 80-100 km/h (50-62 mph) are expected across Ireland, Wales and England Wednesday night with lingering gusts in eastern England Thursday morning.

“The greatest concern with damaging winds is across northern Ireland, northern Wales, northern En gland and the Midlands,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

“These areas could see wind gusts up to 130 km/h (81 mph),” added Roys.

This threat would include the cities of Dublin, Liverpool and Manchester.

More wintry showers and cold winds are expected throughout the British Isles on Thursday and Friday.
