The United States and Vietnam have agreed that a US aircraft carrier will visit a port in the Southeast Asian nation for the first time.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis met Vietnamese Defense Minister Ngo Xuan Lich in the capital, Hanoi, on Thursday.

Vietnam's Defense Ministry says the 2 sides agreed that a US carrier will visit the central port of Danang in March.

In a separate meeting on the same day, Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong told Mattis that his visit to Vietnam would further solidify bilateral security cooperation.

Mattis underscored US cooperation to ensure freedom of na vigation in the South China Sea. Beijing has been increasing its maritime activities in the area even though it has territorial disputes with Hanoi and other parties.

Mattis said "it's in America's best interest to see a strong and prosperous and independent Vietnam."

Analysts say the carrier visit is meant to symbolize security cooperation between the 2 nations more than 40 years after the end of the Vietnam War.

They say the visit is also intended to keep China in check in the South China Sea.
